Arusha is the capital of Tanzania located in the northeast of the country. The city has 341,155 inhabitants (survey 2005) and is located about 90 km southwest of the summit of Kilimanjaro at 1,400 m altitude. Just north is the small Arusha National Park with the 4565 m extinct volcano Mount Meru and Ngurdoto Crater.
Since the 1970s, the population increased sevenfold. Today, Arusha is the center of the Tanzanian Tourist Board. Due to the many safari-tourists who come to Arusha the town is nicknamed Dar Safari (based on Dar es Salaam, the largesit city in Tanzania). Arusha is one of the most important industrial sites in Tanzania for raw material processing, especially coffee, corn etc.
The city has good transport, including a regional airport. Kilimanjaro International Airport is located about 50 kilometers towards the east neighboring town of Moshi. Arusha is also linked by railway from Dar Es Salaam.
