Creating new pages

There are various ways to create new pages: One is to search for the title and if the page name does not exist click on the create this page link. Another way is to create a wiki link from an already existing page to a page title that does not yet exist and thereafter follow the link to create the new page (links to pages that do not yet exist appear in red). Another method is to type the URL of a page that does not already exist and click on the create tab, for example:

http://www.tanzaniawiki.com/My_New_Page

The underscores in the page name denotes spaces and the page name becomes the page heading, so the above URL would create a page with the heading My New Page.

Deleting, renaming or moving pages

If you create a page and would like to change the page title, either delete it and recreate a new page with the new title, or if the page has existed for a while and has links pointing to it, you can change its location via the move tab. Users visiting the old location will automatically be redirected to the new.

Deleting or moving (renaming) pages can only be done while signed in.

Uploading images

Uploading images can only be done while signed in. An Upload file link will appear in the toolbox menu on the left when signed in. Not only images can be uploaded but a wide range of file formats, eg. PDF, Word, RTF, Mpeg etc.

Wiki text editing

The most basic text editing features, such as boldface, italics and links can be formatted with help of the buttons above the edit box.

Error creating thumbnail: Unable to save thumbnail to destination

Alternatively, the syntax is simple. For bold text, enclose the word(s) within three single quotes:

bold text

For italic, enclose the text with two single quotes:

italic text

Link to pages within this wiki

To link a text to another page within the wiki, enclose the word or phrase in square double brackets:

Jambo

The above mark-up will create a link to the page named Jambo.

Link to pages on the Swahili wiki

Linking to articles on the Swahili wiki is done by enclosing the full URL, a space, and the linked words in a single set of square brackets:

A link to Jambo on Swahili wiki

The link will appear as follows:

A link to Jambo on Swahili wiki

The same applies to links to external websites.

Link to external websites

Linking to external websites is done by enclosing the full URL, a space, and the linked words in a single set of square brackets:

example link

This will result in example link

Alternatively, type out the full URL without the square brackets:

http://www.example.com

The link will then appear as follows:

http://www.example.com

Placing an asterix before will make the link appear as a list item:

* http://www.example.com

See more on lists below.

Lists

To make a list, prefix the list items with asterixes:

* item 1
* item 2
* item 3

The list will appear as follows:

  • item 1
  • item 2
  • item 3

Nested lists can be made by:

* item 1
* item 2
** item 2.2
*** item 2.3
* item 3

To appear as:

  • item 1
  • item 2
    • item 2.2
      • item 2.3
  • item 3

etc.

Some HTML tags are permitted in wikitext. The majority of fancy formatting seen on wiki sites is done using these tags combined with CSS styles. Further information at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:HTML_in_wikitext

Images

Displaying images that have been uploaded on either the German or English wiki is done by the or tag. By default the image appears in original size as it was uploaded, unless a pixels width is added after a horizontal bar in the code to display the image in the right size, as follows:

View over Zanzibar Channel from Serena Inn Hotel

To align the image on the left of the page with a text paragraph floating along the right of the image, add the left attrubute as follows:

Depending on the length of the paragraph and size of the image it may be necessary to prevent the next paragraph or section to flow around the image by adding the following html tag after the paragraph:

<br clear="all">

View over Zanzibar Channel from Serena Inn Hotel

Unless the left attribute is is specified the image will automatically float to the right:

Images that that do not have captions, omit the thumb keyword and the caption. Images without captions do not float to the right by default.

For further info on image display, see:

Wide images

To display an image that may be wider than typical screens in a sideways scrollable box, the syntax is:

Examples:

The below example is produced by the following code:

Wide_image.jpg
Error creating thumbnail: File with dimensions greater than 12.5 MP
Example image

To display the same image but without a caption, simply omit the caption:

Wide_image.jpg

To right-align the image while taking up 45% of the paragraph width:

Or define a fixed width for the scrollbox, eg. 250 pixels:

Image galleries

Use the <gallery> ... </gallery> tags to display a thumbnail gallery which links to the larger versions of the images. Images can be individually captioned and wiki mark-up or html code can be used within captions.

<gallery>

Image:0000975.jpg
Image:0000956.jpg

Image:0000351.jpg
Image:0000349.jpg|Standard wiki syntax may be used
</gallery>

Image links

0001254.jpg

By default, when adding an image on a page, the image links to a larger version. To make the image link to a wiki page instead, add the link= parameter to the image code, as follows:

Or link to an external URL:

Email address link

Display an email address link by prefixing the address with the mailto: tag and place in a standard external link bracket as follows:

[mailto:hello@example.com hello@example.com]

The email link will appear as:

hello@example.com

Scaling images

There is no restriction on image sizes that can be uploaded on this wiki except for that a single uploaded file can not exceed 30 MB. The uploaded original should either be larger than displayed on the actual page or the same size. In other words, images can be scaled down, not up (at least not with good quality result). Uploading images about 1000 pixels in width is usually a good size that will cover all likely display scenarios.

For example, an image named Jambo.png was uploaded in 482x481pixels. To thereafter display this image in reduced size on page, add the width parameter within the File or Image tag after a vertical bar, as follows:

0001254.jpg

The image is shown in 200 pixels width. Clicking on the image will lead to the full-size original.

Section headings

Section headings are created with the following syntax:

Heading
Or bold headings as they appear throughout this page:

Heading
Table of Contents

The table of contents (TOC) box at the top of the page is automatically generated when there are four or more section headings on a page.

To prevent the TOC appearing on a page, add the following string anywhere in the wiki text:

__NOTOC__

Language switch

To make the link Swahili in the left menu leading to a Swahili version of a page, add the following string anywhere in the wiki text:

sw:Page_name

To make the link English appear on the Swahili language wiki leading to an English version of a page, add the following string anywhere in the wiki text:

en:Page_name

Skype button

To display a button that launches Skype and calls or starts a chat, configure your Skype account to allow its status to be shown online in Tools->Options->Privacy within your Skype application. Tick the checkbox Allow my status to be shown on the web:

The following example will create a button from which a call can be made to a defined address when clicked on:

<skype style="bigclassic" action="call">ExampleSkypeName</skype>

<skype style="bigclassic" action="call">tanzaniawiki</skype>

The available styles are: balloon, bigclassic, smallclassic, smallicon, mediumicon

The available actions are: add, chat or call

Further information at: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/share/buttons/status.html

Google Maps

To create new or edit existing Google maps on pages, click on the map button above the edit box. Find the region to display, set the various size and display options and thereafter copy the generated Google map code into the edit box and save the page.

Various display options include satellite view, map view, adding of place markers, drawing lines etc.

YouTube videos

To embed a YouTube video, simply copy the video ID from a YouTube URL, e.g.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKDwIiPw94I and paste the ID into the edit form< as follows:

<youtube>qKDwIiPw94I</youtube>

<youtube>qKDwIiPw94I</youtube>

Google videos

To add a Google video on a page, retrieve the ID from the code by clicking the Embed video link next to or below the video screen, or extract the ID (docid string) from the URL if the correct one is part of it. For example:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5791079677633020966&hl&hl=en

Then simply place the ID in the following googlevideo tag:

<googlevideo>-5791079677633020966&hl</googlevideo>

<googlevideo>-5791079677633020966&hl</googlevideo>
